just wondering, what game do you think had the most influence on todays games?i think it was mario kart for SNES, because as far back as i can remember, it was one of the first 3d games
Hughesy
Lots of games influenced todays games and still do

Some influential games to their respective genre's should probably include;

Tetris
Mario and Sonic
Final Fantasy
Doom - i'd like to think very much so
Halo
Grand Theft Auto
Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter
Fifa '95

Many games are influenced from the above and hundreds of other games
Games are very much focused on more complex storylines these days where the story unfolds as the player progresses through the game
Some may argue this takes the fun out of playing which in some cases it does - Not to make a dig at FFX but beating the hardest bosses in the game requires 30-40 hours of "working" to level up characters

No, this game will the most influential. EVIL infuential game

1. Command & Conquer - Almost every RTS game today is based more or less on C&C
2. Super Mario World - I don't know if it was revolutionary, but to me and many others, it was, and still is, the best game ever. That has to say something about its influence on games and gamers.
3. Street Fighter/SF II - I agree with Ant, Street Fighter was a revolutionary game that brought a breath of fresh air to the dying arcades at the time.
4. Wolfenstein 3D - Revolutionary 1st person shooter?

Atari fans will most likely have a different list of influential/revolutionary games that I probably won't be able to object to. My knowledge on the life of Atari is limited, and the only two games I can think of right now that paved the way for tens of clones and were revolutionary are Galaga for its gameplay and Asteroids for being the first game to have a High Scores table.

In FF games, it seems like the objective is as much about leveling up characters to 999999... as it is about beating the final boss. I always get bored and end up regretting it when the last boss beats the hell out of me in the end. pinch.gif
Trickyz
Starfox for N64 and Tekken.
Iron Gland
Super Mario Bros. 3 and Doom.
Kazama
Pong and Pacman.

Without those, we'd be nothing.
Iron Gland
Kazama's got a point. Also I thought Space Invaders was the first game to have a high scores capability.
usr.c
hmm...I think you're right Iron Gland. I don't where I got the fact that Space Invaders was released in 1981 from.

According to this page, Space Invaders was released in 1978, a year before Asteroids, so that would make it the first game with high scores.
Mario
hmmz... Pong Started The Idea of It All. The Revolutionary Thought Of Putting Electronics for Fun in your Own Home (thx to Odessy biggrin.gif ) And Space Invaders With Starting Scores.

But.. One Of The Most Influencial Games Was Mario Bros.

The Reason I Say This, is Because The Nintendo Chain Started By That Game Holds The Record For the Longest Line Of Characters and Spin Offs. (im tired im not going technical with rite words lol) I Mean Here:

Mario Bros.
Donkey Kong
Donkey Kong 2
Super Mario Brothers
Super Mario Brothers 2
Super Mario Brothers 3
The Legend Of Zelda
Super Mario Kart
Super Mario World
Marios Time Machine
Mario Is Missing
The Legend of The 7 Coins (Mario RPG)
Wario
Nes
Metroid
etc etc..

This Also Influenced Final Fantasy By Keeping The Same Streak Like Nintendo Did. Webbing Their Characters And Lines. FF1-FFXII etc etc..
Being The Thriving Source Nintendo Dominated. And Because People Want More.. Others Came To Play.

Yes I Think Without Pong And Space Invaders We Wouldnt Have This Form Of Gaming. (well maybe...) But Without Mario... We Wouldnt Have Nintendo blink.gif and we wouldnt have an Empire that we can Enjoy.

Eh.. Nintendo Did A Lot For The Gaming Corp. You Musnt Forget Mario biggrin.gif

Hi there, first post but wanted to say 'really' that award goes to Dune 2. original.gif
It was the game that launched command and conquer.

As for other games, there are probably too many to choose.
Having been an avid gamer most of my life however i do remember a few defining moments.
The Orchid righteous 3d card (4 meg) for example revolutionised the PC gaming market.
Up until then we were all paying silly amounts for small ram upgrades to cards and systems and still only had lego vision graphics.Seperate 2d and 3d cards were the only way forward then, no all in one cards that there are thousands of today.
Suddenly, patches became available for the likes of tomb raider etc and the lego was gone+ the speed was up.Accelerated graphics lifted off!
Amazing.People who missed that era will never experience anything like that again i doubt.

In fact, tomb raider is on my list as influential. The first time i played that on PSX1 it really was an amazing experience and one i had never had before in such a way.Even the music was superb.Of course, younger players who have grown up with various new tomb raiders and similar games will never know quite how refreshing it was!

Need for Speed on the 3D0 was another milestone and still, imho the best need for speed 'sim' available.I still have mine in fact and although it looks rubbish by todays standards it really was superb and a leap forward.Road rash was much the same in terms of graphical power and speed.Grand Prix legends was another incredible experience.I still have the original in my loft somewhere purchased on day of release all those years ago.

I could waffle on all day about games that rocked my world i guess.
Alien Breed, doom, quake, mario 64, Dune2, red alert/c&c, ridge racer, Elite (BBC Micro), Monkey Island etc, Pong, Outrun, alien VS predator (Jaguar),stuntcar racer (C64),pole position in the arcades in 1982 (pretty good 3d!)....ahh the list is endless.

Picture me huddled over a black and white pong machine in my house in 1975..then an Atari VCS in 1977 and then imagine loads of consoles since then and i have owned most them and had influential games (imho) on most of them.

What a trip down memory lane this is thumbsup.gif

Great post, Boomer! I've never played Dune 2, but have heard about it and I just did some reading on its history at http://www.gamespot.com/gamespot/features/...time/p3_02.html

The first RTS game I ever played was Red Alert, which I loved so much that I went back and played C&C and then every successive game after that (except Renegade).

Oh and welcome to the board thumbsup.gif
