The DO’S and DON’TS of E-mail by Paul

DON’TS:-
  • DON'T Open e-mail from an address you don’t recognise.
  • DON'T Open e-mail with attachments (unless you are expecting them)
  • DON'T Open attachments without virus checking. (Download first then Virus check)
  • DON'T Open attachment with *.scr or *.vbs extension.
  • If you get a newsletter subscription e-mail you did not sign up to, it is not always a good idea to click the unsubscribe link as this confirms this is a working address. (Best to just delete newsletter e-mails)
  • DON'T Use your main e-mail address to submit your own web site to search engines.
  • DON'T Use your main e-mail address to register software, sign up to web space, other free web services or to download software.
  • If you get a Virus Waning e-mail from someone you know, asking you to forward it to everyone in you address book, please don’t as these e-mails are usually hoaxes (check this site http://www.sophos.com/virusinfo/hoaxes/index_hoax.html first).
  • DON'T Register a free second web e-mail account with Micro$oft Hotmail as you will get lots of Spam e-mail (some are very inappropriate i.e. pornographic).
  • DON'T Post your main e-mail address on message boards for all to see. (As you risk getting Spam or Viruses.)
  • DON'T Put your main e-mail address on your own web site. (i.e when submitted to search engines, the bots could record your e-mail and then the search engines could sell it to third parties (i.e. advertisers).
DO’S:-
  • DO Register a free second web e-mail account. (Look at Free webmail search FAQ for a list of free e-mail accounts.)
  • DO Use second address to register software, sign up to web space, other free web services, to download software, or to submit you own web site to search engines.
  • DO Download expected attachment and Virus check them before opening.
  • DO Use second address on your own web site with a JavaScript Spam filter or add underscores (i.e _myusername@isp.net_) and ask the user to manually delete the underscores when sending you e-mail.
